Workshop on climate change and adaptation measures for people with disabilities in Tajikistan

On May 7 and 8, a unique seminar entitled “Climate change, its consequences and adaptation measures in Tajikistan” was held at the office of the National Association of Disabled Persons of Tajikistan (NOIT). This important event became part of the project “Increasing the capacity of regional activists on the issue of climate change and its impact on people with disabilities”, supported by the Eurasia Foundation.

The seminar brought together recognized experts in the field of climate science and emergency situations. Among them were Natalya Idrisova, who was included in the top 100 influential women according to the BBC for 2023, and Azizbekov Aziz, a representative of the Committee for Emergency Situations under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. The participants were heads of public organizations of people with disabilities from regions of republican subordination and GBAO.

During the event, critical topics related to climate change and its impact on people with disabilities were discussed. Ways to solve environmental problems were proposed, such as the transition to conscious consumption, the use of renewable energy and methods for creating green cities. In addition, situational issues related to emergency management were considered.

This workshop highlighted the importance of integrating climate change issues into the agenda of community organizations, especially those working with people with disabilities. In the face of global climate change, adaptation and resilience are key to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.

The project within which the seminar was held was created with the support of the Eurasia Foundation and the Social Innovation in Central Asia (SICA) program, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This event is a shining example of how international cooperation and local initiatives can help solve global environmental problems and improve people’s lives.
